I was recently sent a selection of "Magnetic Lights" light painting tools by France based light painter Guilhem Jadikan. This review takes a detailed look at this new light painting system.

Review

The Magnetic Lights light painting system uses strong magnetic attachments to connect a wide range of light painting tools, to a selection of torch/flashlight adapters.

Flashlight Connectors include compatibility with the following flashlights/torches:

  • Sofirn SP31 Pro (side switch, Anduril UI based flashlight) - default.

  • Ants on a Melon RGB Critter 1/2/BT.

  • Light Painting Paradise LightPainter Ryu's V1 (also fits Sofirn SP31 V2).

  • Light Painting Paradise LightPainter Ryu's V2 (also fits Noctigon KR4).

  • Custom orders.

Tools in the system include:

  • Snoot.

  • Small, Medium, and Large Pens.

  • Over-Pen (fits over Large Pen to add effects).

  • Cover (shield for illumination, or creates a portrait scanner with the Large Pen).

  • Single Color (flat diffuser).

  • Neon Brush (creates more solid light trails).

  • Colourwheel + Filters (user replaceable slots).

  • Filter Set (10 colour filters).

  • Diaphan Tool (2 section tool).

  • Magnetic Screw (for stick tools to screw into).

  • Iridescent Stick.

  • Various Stick tools.

  • LPB Connector.

  • Magnetic Screw (allows attachment to plastic bottles).

The magnetic connections are impressively strong, and requires very vigorous shaking to break the magnetic bond. The magnetic connection allows for tools to be swapped over quickly, which is important in light painting, which can be a race against time (or race against ambient light).

This modular light painting system is designed to be extremely flexible, and I spent many hours playing around with the various combinations. In particular I liked the Large Pen/Over-Pen/Pen Cover grouping which can be used as 2 different light wand effects, a traffic wand diffuser, a portrait scanner, or a light shield for illuminating scenes. I also liked the range of small tools that included a (very good) Snoot, Small Pen, and Single Color (flat diffuser). The Small Pen does attenuate a lot of light, and I have provided feedback that a less attenuating material may be better for fine light light trails and creating starbursts Update - this tool has been improved based on my feedback with a more transparent filament.

Colour filters can be placed into the magnetic adapters. They can also be placed into the Colorwheel device, which can be flicked (it doesn't physically spin) to change colours in approximately 2-3 seconds. It is quite hefty, so care needs to be taken that it doesn't show up in the light trail.

With the current tool range available, this light painting system is most suited for detailed light drawing and light calligraphy genres of light painting. If you require longer tools, a LPB connector is available.

Some example photos are below, and more will be added as I explore the capabilities of this light painting system.

Conclusion

The Magnetic Lights system of light painting tools uses a novel magnetic connection system, that allows for quick change over between tools, and flexible modular tool options. It is a good choice for light calligraphy and detailed light drawings.
