IEM Buying Guide 2026

In Ear Monitors (IEMs) have massively improved in sound quality during the last decade, with even budget options producing impressive sound quality. With lots of Chinese companies in competition (resulting in the Chi-Fi nickname) to optimise sound quality at a range of different price points, as well as established audio manufacturers, it is a fantastic time for consumers.
This buying guide takes a look at the most recommended consumer IEMs in 2026 up to US$400, from my own testing, expert opinions, as well as reviews on online forums such as Reddit r/iems. This may be primarily a photography website, but hey, photographers often disappear down tech rabbit holes! My first IEM was a budget priced 7HZ x Crinacle Zero, and I was amazed at the sound quality from such a small sound source, surpassing considerably more expensive headphones that I have previously used. I can listen to audio for hours with no ear fatigue.
IEM Basics
What are IEMs? In Ear Monitors are a lot more than "fancy ear buds". They are typically wired to optimise sound quality, with very few Bluetooth options. They have an ear tip, which needs to form a perfect seal within the ear canal to optimise sound quality. The shape is bulkier than ear buds, allowing for larger and/or multiple drivers to produce sound. More expensive IEMs tend to have more complex driver configurations with frequency crossovers. They may have 3.5mm (or sometimes 4.4mm) audio plugs/jacks, with some models having USB-C input. The wires hook over the top of the user's ears from front to back.
Which IEMs are best? There is no perfect answer here. Unlike studio monitor speakers which aim to have a flat frequency response curve, IEMs have varying sound signatures - frequency response curves. These may include bright (treble heavy), warm (bass heavy), balanced/flat, or V shaped (more bass and treble than midrange). As humans have subjective preferences to what sounds good, added to range of sound signatures, variations in ear canal anatomy, and ear tip fit, there can be a lot of variability. Yes, you can buy one IEM and be very happy, but it's not uncommon for IEM enthusiasts to buy more than one with different sound signatures. If you are new to IEMs, I would recommend purchasing in the under $40 range, and seeing what works for you.

More Rabbit Holes
You can just buy a pair of IEMs and be happy. However, there are plenty of other rabbit holes to go down:
Ear tips - changing ear tips known as "tip rolling" can change the sound signature or comfort of IEMs. Wider bores usually let through more treble, and narrow bores are better for bass. Popular options are the Dunu S&S, Divinus Velvet, Spinfit W1, and Kiwi Ears Flex. Ear tips at Linsoul.
DAC/AMP - Digital Analogue Converters (DAC) with amplifiers can improve sound quality (more so for >$50 IEMs and/or when interfacing USB-C sources such as smart phones to IEMs with 3.5/4.4mm plugs. IEMs have a very high sensitivity, so don't require too much amplification. Popular portable options include (at increasing price points and sound quality) the JCALLY JM6PRO II, JCALLY JM20MAX, FiiO KA11, Moondrop Dawn Pro2.
EQ - using DSP software to adjust the equalization can change the sound quality of IEMs, and reduce any annoying peaks and dips in the frequency response. Some IEMs respond to EQ better than others.
Cables - these can also make a difference to sound quality. IEMs have a range of cable to IEM connection types.
Carrying Cases - there are many storage/carrying case options. IEMs don't like moisture, so keep desiccant packets in any storage containers.
The below lists are in order of price in US$, not the best in each category. The "best" IEM will always be subjective, but is quite often at the more expensive end of each category.
Best IEMs under $25
These will all deliver decent sound quality, very impressive for the price when compared to headphones. Build quality is good, but may only last a few years of heavy use.

A popular gateway to IEMs, designed as a cost-effective and comfortable IEM with fairly balanced sound signature. Available with/without Mic.
Moondrop Chu II $23 (DSP $28) 1DD Chu II at Linsoul  / Chi II DSP at Linsoul
One of the most popular budget IEMs, with a VSDF V-shaped sound signature. Reports that ports can get easily clogged with ear wax, and oxidisation issues in humid environments. The USB-C DSP version allows for app controlled EQ changes.
TAGZU Wan'er S.G II Red Lion $23 1DD Linsoul
Slightly more expensive than the OG S.G II, the Red Lion is a good budget option for bass heads. Bassy V-shaped sound signature. Available with 3.5mm plug with/without mic, or USB-C with mic.
7Hz x Crinacle Zero 2 $25 1DD Linsoul
This is my personal favourite budget IEM, with phenomenal sound quality for the price, works with a wide range of music, and comfortable to wear. Slight V-shaped sound signature, both bassy and bright. Developed by 7Hz and renowned IEM expert Crinacle. Available with 3.5mm plug with/without mic, or USB-C with mic. If you can't decide on a budget IEM, this is your best option.
Best IEMs under $50
This price range has a noticeable improvement in sound quality and build quality. I have listed the most recommended IEMs at gradually increasing price points.
Tripowin x 0DiBi Vivace $30 1DD Linsoul
Designed in conjunction with South Korean audio reviewer 0DiBi, this IEM has a balanced V-shaped sound signature. It is the best budget IEM for gamers.
Kiwi Ears Belle $30 1DD Linsoul
The IEM is designed to deliver a lively yet accurate sound that suits every scenario—from casual music enjoyment to gaming and professional monitoring. Neutral to bright sound signature. Available with 3.5mm plug with/without mic, or USB-C with mic.
ooopusX Op.22Â $35 2DD 2BA Aliexpress
A fairly new IEM which is getting excellent reviews, and can compete with more expensive IEMs. It can be switched between two different tuning modes - natural, and bass boost.
Kiwi Ears Cadenza II $50 1DD Linsoul
Highly acclaimed and affordable IEM with a vibrant and detailed V-shaped sound signature. Tuned for optimal sub-bass and warm midrange. A noticeable step up from more budget IEMs, and the best option for most users in the $50 and under category.
Best IEMs under $100
IEMs in this category have multiple drivers to create more detailed sound quality.
Simgot EW300Â $80 1DD 1P 1PZT Linsoul
A very well reviewed IEM at this price point, with triple driver combination, and detachable nozzles with two different sound signatures - SIMGOT-Golden2023 and H-2019 target curves. This IEM is designed for both audiophiles and gamers, and is a solid choice. HBB, and USB-C DSP versions also available.
Truthear Pure/Hexa $90 1DD 3BA Hexa at Aliexpress  / Pure at Aliexpress  Â
The Truthear Pure and Hexa have a similar price point, but quite different tuning and BA drivers. The Pure is more warm neutral, and the Hexa is more neutral. Mainly positive reviews, but not for everyone.

Recommended for audiophiles who like value detail, clarity, and a fatigue-free presentation for just $100. Slight V-shaped signature. Available with 3.5mm or 4.4mm plugs, or USB-C.
Best IEMs under $150
In the $100 to $150 price bracket, we start to see some established audio manufacturers as well as Chi-Fi manufacturers.
AFUL Explorer $110 1DD 2BA Aliexpress
The AFUL Explorer delivers rich, detailed sound with precise bass, clear mids, and sparkling highs for an immersive listening experience. Warm sound signature, and the "go to" IEM for many IEM enthusiasts in this price range. Often available under $100. Available with 4.4mm or 3.5mm plug options.
SIMGOT EM6L $125 1DD 4BA Linsoul
Very popular IEM, tuned for the Harman-2019 response curve. This IEM is designed for both audiophiles and gamers.
Beyerdynamic DT 30 IEÂ $150 1DD
New "budget" professional quality IEMs from Beyerdynamic which have been very well received by early reviewers, noting good comfort, IP54 rating (which is something that most IEMs lack), 39dB passive sound isolation, and replaceable parts. Balanced sound signature.
Sennheiser IE200 $150 1DD
The Sennheiser IE200s have a good reputation for a balanced response with elevated bass, low weight, small size, and comfortable fit (including for people with smaller ears). Popular with musicians.
Best IEMs under $200
This price range is aimed for those wanting a more discerning listing experience, and high quality construction.

Best IEMs US$200-400
This category has multiple impressive IEMs suitable for a more critical audience, or those with lots of spare cash! I've limited this article to max US$400, as I would expect that those spending more will be reading more specialist articles.
